Response 3: The Jump

Wind shrieks in my ears, pounding my jumpsuit and spinning me head over heels. I look down at toy houses and tiny cars scurrying along the highways like beetles searching for food. I look up and my plane is but a speck of dust in a sea of blue. Was this a good idea?

My thoughts are interrupted by a sharp tug as my parachute billows open. I glance up and breathe a sigh of relief. Everything seems to be in order. The wind dies down. All is still and calm. Silence, golden silence as I meander lazily through the wispy white clouds. The ground looms through the clouds. I can clearly make out birds nesting in a tree. A sudden gust of wind pushes me off-course, heading towards an electric pylon. I pull frantically at my toggles but it’s too late. Searing heat fills my body.

Silence. Eternal silence.

  1. The last sentence gave me goose-pimples. A rollercoaster of emotions, from the initial fear to peacefulness to horror!
