Response 3: £15, what a bargain!

I had been working with Jessie, an 8 year old with selective mutism for several months without her uttering a single word. She could speak, her mother had heard her talking to her dolls.

One Thursday Jessie and I went to the shops she stopped at some lovely red shoes. At £15 they were a bargain.  ‘Would you like those?’ I asked.  She nodded her head vigorously.  Although I knew I shouldn’t, I decided to buy them.  Back at school they were quickly on her feet and with a huge grin on her face she danced around.  When her mother arrived Jessie pointed to her shoes. I explained to Mrs Jacobs that I had bought them.  She thanked me then turned to Jessie, in a voice as clear as crystal Jessie said ‘Thank you for my beautiful brand new shoes Sam.’ That was the best £15.00 I have ever spent.

  1. Enchanting tale, an example of how a small act of kindness can go a long way.
