I had been at CERN on the large hadron collider for just over a year. The search for the Higgs Boson had been my passion since I was young. The God Particle, the missing part of the jigsaw that would make sense of so much.
There were two teams working on the data collected last year. We were on shifts working around the clock deciphering the massive amount of code; it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack the size of the moon.
It was late, or early, it was difficult to tell down here, but the clock said 3am. I was struggling to focus on the data in front of me. I picked up on a line that seemed to talk to me, I blinked, was I dreaming? No, it was clearly a line of binary code ‘Game over, 12th January 2013’. The lights went out.
