The date is 21st July 1969. I’m going to make my own history today. I am so proud of myself.
I made myself the class clown in school; it worked well with the kids, not so much the teachers.
Until this day I hadn’t made anything of myself, but this was going to be a day to remember for the rest of my life.
We were all gathered around in a non-descript building chatting about how we were going to do it. It came to my turn ‘my name is Neil and I’m an alcoholic.’ As I stepped out of that building I said the same words as my namesake across the pond - "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." My momentous words may not go down in the world’s history, but to me they were the first step on the way to complete recovery.
