Response 5: Falling

The icy air took John by surprise. He had been in his room for days. Not knowing what was going on outside, not knowing what time of day it was. The cold stopped him in his tracks briefly , but, still determined, he pulled himself up and stepped out onto the ledge. He kept his eyes pressed shut while he waited for his heart to stop pounding. It didn’t. When he opened them he could see the lights of the city and the skyline of canary wharf in the distance. He could hear the noises of the city: A siren, crying, drunks fighting on the corner. He tried hard to shut the noises out, like he always did. At this moment he wanted silence but he knew he would never find that in this world.

He glanced over his shoulder for a second and then stepped out into the darkness.

  1. The loneliness and alienation of the city. How many people live like this, hidden from view?
